Crop Advice: Are You Planning to Succeed or Fail?
This year, with expenses on the increase, input availability and supply chain issues weighing heavily on your mind, you may be wondering how you’ll survive. There are several paths you can consider taking: Do you look at your budgets and cut expenses to limp through or do you stick to an aggressive plan and possibly look at ways to come out on top?
The simplest and easiest route to take is to cut costs. This takes less work than trying to create new plans and come up with various options for what situations may arise. But what effects will this have on your overall on operation? You will notice immediate changes in your budget and possibly a short-term positive response. However, will the long term still be a positive response or turn quickly negative?
A saying that I mention to my customers and strongly believe in is that “if you plan to fail, then you will fail.” So how do we turn this around into a positive and have the mindset of creating a plan to succeed and come out on top?
The goal isn’t to create the most bushels per acre. The goal for your operation should be to create the most dollars per acre by considering what your return on investment is.
Here are some suggestions to consider while working through a plan:
You don’t have to create every acre the same. Spend some time to determine what is needed or not needed by:
- Scouting
- Soil testing
- Tissue testing
Protect your standard input purchases by adding the following based on your scouting, soil testing, and tissue testing:
- Seed Treatments
- Nitrogen Stabilizers
- Different pesticide options based on pest pressures and available products
- Fungicides
- Micronutrients
Additional products to consider gaining a greater ROI:
- PGR’s, Plant Growth Regulators
- Technology to assist your above products to work more efficiently with the plants
- Technology to help you apply and take more control of costs
